JPT Research Digest

The Journal of Psychological Type® was an international publication founded in 1977 and the premiere journal for research, theory and applications in the field of psychological type until 2015.

The annual Research Digest (JPT-RD) grew from the Journal of Psychological Type and summarizes select research articles from peer-reviewed journals in the previous year that contribute to the practice and/or theory of psychological type and the MBTI® instrument. A "Field Notes" section alerts readers to other type-related research activities and publications, such as white papers, theses, and dissertations.

This issue of the JPT-RD includes these studies from researchers around the world:

  • Identifying Personality Type for Organizations. Using the MBTI® system for personality detection from text has been popular in research for several years and covered in past issues of the Research Digest. This is a novel study that employed machine learning to analyze texts from Glassdoor reviews of companies to establish an organizational type.
  • MBTI and Aberrant Personality Traits. Utilizing a large database (n = 8,330) from a consulting firm in the UK, where respondents took the MBTI Form G and the NEO-PI-R (which can calculate results for 10 personality disorders based on aberrant personality dimensions), this study presents correlations between type and aberrant traits.
  • Impact of Self-Awareness in Student Leaders. A study exploring how student leaders' self-awareness of their leadership styles changed through engaging in self-reflection. The research questions were: (1) What do students know about their personality and leadership style after having taken the MBTI instrument, and (2) Can engaging in self-reflection impact leadership?
  • Personality Characteristics of Gifted Students. The purpose of this exploratory quantitative study was to examine the personality characteristics of elementary school students within the top 1% of general intellectual ability in contrast to general education students using the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children® assessment, the Big Five Indicator for Children, and the Overexcitabilities Questionnaire-Two personality measures.

  • Predicting personality type through diction of online users. Machine learning algorithms were developed by analyzing over 400,000 individual posts that produced an 80% accuracy rate in predicting Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) preferences and 52% accuracy in predicting whole type.
  • Psychological type therapy: A practitioner's guide. A review of a recent book by psychotherapists who work with children, adults, and families. A comprehensive guide with many exercises for application and two free assessments on relationships and personality type.
  • Exploration of empathy and personality type in counselors. A correlational study confirms similar results of type and empathy as past studies, including one from the CAPT team, with a couple of surprises.
  • Type development in childhood and beyond. A theoretical article from a children's type expert provides valuable distinctions between skill and development and traces the spiral evolution of type development in children and adults.
  • MBTI personality type and cross-cultural competency. A relevant and timely study of how personality type impacts cross-cultural competency, increased mental health, and decreased turnover in Korean flight crew members of a foreign airline carrier.
  • Analysis of MBTI personality types in Japanese manga. Methodologies from previous analyses of anime characters is applied to a recent superhero shōnen manga that develops a new methodology.

This issue of the JPT-RD includes these studies from researchers around the world:

  • Machine Learning Approach to Personality Type Prediction. This study developed new machine learning methods for automating personality prediction with a goal to assist Neuro Linguist Programming (NLP) practitioners. Results matched those in a similar study highlighted in the JPT-RD in 2018.
  • Entrepreneurial Tendencies by Different Personalities. With a goal to better recognize students with an entrepreneurial mindset, this investigation focused on entrepreneurial aspects of personality types in Finland.
  • Personality Type, Eating Behavior, and Suicide Risk. A study in South America that measured associations between personality characteristics, eating behavior, and suicide risk in clinical patients receiving treatment for obesity. Results demonstrated that ISFJ and ESFJ were the most prevalent types in these groups.
  • The Effects of MBTI® Applied Peer-to-Peer Relationship Improvement Training. An experimental study from Korea that investigated the impact of MBTI relationship building training on self-esteem, depression, and anger in nursing students. Significant results were found in all three measures.
  • Personality Type and Language Learning Strategies. A master's thesis presents a mixed-methods study examining the relationship between personality type and learning strategies for students engaged in undergraduate foreign language courses.
  • Sex, Madness, and Spirituality. An in-depth article exploring the connection between personality type, relationship to sexuality, and individuation in dominant introverted intuitive types.

This issue of the JPT-RD includes these studies from researchers around the world:

  • SubReddit Community: Life after taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Tool Reddit is an online forum with a large MBTI® community where members share their enthusiasm with others who know the MBTI theory. This investigation found ample evidence that the site fulfilled the needs of many intelligent Redditors to connect with others, using the vocabulary of the MBTI framework.
  • Heroism and Leadership Potential of Future CEOs Participants in this study wrote heroic stories in which they were the protagonist and were administered the MBTI® assessment and a questionnaire on Personal Values. A cross correlation of typological preferences and personal values revealed expected results, particularly an emphasis on Conformity (Sensing) and Self-Direction (Thinking); of surprise was a low showing for Tradition considering the predominance of Sensing types.
  • Relationship of Gender, Age and Personality on Entrepreneurial Attitude This investigation focused on the role that age, gender, and personality have on entrepreneurial attitudes of adults. The study offered a valuable replication of type preferences in entrepreneurial attitudes and provided additional insights into the impact of age and gender.
  • MBTI® for Interprofessional Communication Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important area of healthcare education that supports students to learn about, from, and with each other through collaborative and direct efforts. Results of this examination of physical therapy students showed that women tended towards Extraversion and Thinking significantly more and men towards Introversion and Feeling, which was inconsistent with past findings in physical therapy students.
  • Review Article: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® in Medical Education The medical field has a long history of using the MBTI instrument in education, specialty training, selection, and evaluation. This article provides a comprehensive review and analysis of the MBTI® assessment across its varied contributions to medical education. The authors suggest that the MBTI assessment can attenuate biases in medical school interview processes, increase psychological diversity, and enhance team-based learning.
  • Use of MBTI® Step II™ as a Tool for Selecting Clinical Psychology Specialty This study combined a qualitative phenomenological design with the MBTI® Step II™ assessment as a vehicle to probe more deeply into the metacognition and self-knowledge of clinical graduate students in a doctoral program. Several themes highlighted the impact of the MBTI assessment on student's self-knowledge and choice of specialty.

  • Building the Hive: Corporate Personality Testing, Self-Development, and Humanistic Management in Postwar America, 1945–2000 Twentieth century management techniques created an environment that encouraged consideration of individual differences in personality and behavior. The author contends this development constrained the ways people lived and worked inside and outside the office.
